Video Game Review: Naruto: The Broken Bond (Xbox 360)

The game for the Xbox 360 called Naruto The Broken Bond was a continuation of the game Naruto: Rise of Ninja.  The fighter was released in 2008 in North America and had a fairly good reception from other game sites such as IGN giving it an 8.3.  Well, I played through the story mode and some of the vs mode to see if it was any good of a game.  So, here is my review of Naruto: The Broken Bond.

When first starting out the game, for those of you who are Naruto fans, the storyline starts where Rise of Ninja left off, right after the Chunnin exams and so the first fight that you play is the fight between the Third Hokage and Orochimaru.  Though the game does give you hints as to what to do when fighting, they don't give you the basic controls of it, so I would assume that the creators assumption was that you either played the first game, or that you actually read the instruction booklet beforehand.  Anyway, the first fight actually is challenging considering you are fighting Orochimaru and the eventually the First and Second Hokages.  Though they don't give you the controls like i mentioned, the game is fairly easy to pick up and learn.  The storyline goes through the rescue Sasuke arc of the series and ends with Naruto and Sasuke's fight at the Valley of the End.  Though there are some cool fights through the story with the characters such as the sound five, they do go off on random "filler-ish" quests that you have to do for no reason that have nothing to do with the story.

The vs. mode was better than I thought it would be, but only just a bit.  Though the graphics are nice just like the rest of the game, most of the time, it is just button crunching and that takes away the strategy in it.  Along with that, there is a definite inequality between characters with how to activate the special.  Some are very simple and some are almost impossible, so it just depends on the character that you pick.  There is also not that many characters to choose from, limiting the diversity of the different types of characters.  Added on to that is how you have to buy things off of Xbox Live in order to get everything.

On a visual scale, the graphics in this game are very nice, they are clear and precise and adds to the style of the game; and the cut scenes take that and use it well.   Unfortunately, the button crunching takes you away from that because you are focusing on the game too much.

So after playing this game for hours and beating it, I think that this game is very good for the die hard Naruto fan but if you haven't seen the show itself, its harder to understand because they don't explain everything.  So after through the story and playing vs against a friend of mine, I would give the game an 8.5.  The graphics are great and the story is good if you are a Naruto fan.  However, there aren't that many characters to choose from, the fighting is repetitive and you can't get everything unless you have Xbox Live.  I would recommend this game for people who have seen the series before, and also to others if they want to know the series.  For those who don't it's not that great, but it is a good fighter.
