Anime Analyze: K-On! I

Happy Labor Day to everyone, I hope that you all had a nice long weekend, I personally did.  So, the next anime that I will be doing is the first season of the show called K-On!.  Made in 2009 this first season is 13 episodes long, based off of the manga started in 2007.  It was produced by Kyoto Animation, who is known for making shows such as Clannad and Lucky Star, and doing other animation for shows like Inyuasha and Full Metal Panic!.  The opening is "Cagayake! GIRLS" by Aki Toyosaki with Yoko Hikasa, Satomi Satou, and Minako Kotobuki, and the ending is "Don't say "lazy"" by the same people who made the opening.  So, lets get together with Sakuragaoka Girl's High School's light music club and see what they have to show. Side note as well, this is the show that brought about the video game that was reviewed by Hikachan earlier in the summer.

The show starts out at the high school showing how four girls go about starting their time at the school.  There is Yui Hirasawa, Mio Akiyama, Ritsu Tainaka, and Tsumugi Kotobuki.  While Mio and Ritsu know each other, the other girls have no idea that each other exist, until one day Ritsu and Mio decide to bring back the Light Music Club at the school.  After they start it, they find out that the only way to keep the club going is if they get four members to join.  This creates the problem that they need more members fast or they have to disband.  They eventually get Tsumugi to join which leaves them needing one more person.  They already have Ritsu on drums, Mio on bass, and Tsumugi on keyboard, leaving them in need of a lead guitarist.  You can guess what this leads to, Yui eventually joins the club even though she has no previous experience in music really at all, and after joining, starts to learn the guitar.  Well, this club is really, really non-productive, usually practicing a little bit every once and a while and sitting down and eating cake and drinking tea the rest of the time.
Through the series they usually come upon different challenges in their lives and most of them have to do with  different things that happen in real life, hence the whole slice of life genre of anime.  It's not really focused on action , mostly on the comedy sense of it all, and I will give it that, it was a funny show to watch, it did make me laugh many times through the episodes.  Whether its about the absent minded Yui, or the teacher who is obsessed with different costumes for the group there is always something going on that is out of the ordinary which makes the show very entertaining.
The animation of the show was very nice, there were lots of bright colors and there was lots of movement between all parts of the show as you were watching it which helped to keep your attention a lot when watching it.  They also did a good job with the character design, having the faces of the characters change drastically when there is a change in the mood of the group or individual, which helped in the slightly serious times as well as enhancing the comedic moments.

The story itself is well...how do I put this...nonexistent.  While there is the overall goal of the students to get better at music and eventually play in a certain venue at one point, its less on that than it is more of a day to day activity that shows what hilarious adventures this club goes on through its time at that school.  To be quite honest it worked well with it and when it comes to this kind of show, they could not have done it better.  So while you probably could not have called it a story line per-say.  But more like a time-line in which you see what happens through each major event that happens and you get to see how they react to it in detail.

Character development in this show was a bit different than in other shows that I have watched, being that in this show the development is less on back story and character, this show focuses on the character and the relationships that they have with the other characters in the show.  That being the case, I think that the show did a very good job of it, especially Yui early on in the show, having her mature a little bit from the shy person that she was before into a more independent one.  They also went more into the other characters as the series played out and even though they had only 13 episodes they were able to fit a lot of character development into it.

Overall the series was really good, and although this is not the type of show that I usually watch, it was something different and I am not afraid to keep going to watch more.  The show was funny, it had bright and well done animation, and the characters were well designed and portrayed with lots of development in a short amount of time.  I am going to give the show a 9.0.  I would say to those who like more action based anime shouldn't watch the show unless they want a change of pace and want to move to something that is more funny than action based.  Otherwise, if you are more flexible with what you like to watch then check the show out and see how you like it.  I will be watching the second season at some point so you can look for that to come out later, for I have a list of at least 4-5 different shows/OAVs/movies to review before this and I'm sure that it will stay that large for now.

Anyway, the show has earned many different awards including Best TV Animation Award in 2010 at the Tokyo International Anime Fair, as well as having the music that was made for it hit some high numbers on charts around the world.  It has spawned different video games such as the one that Hikachan reviewed back a few months ago, mainly being rhythm based games with music.

That is my review of the show K-On!. As I said, I have a list of things to review so you will be seeing more from me in the future.  Have a good rest of the week everyone!
